Westway Development Trust: solicitors Sinclair-Taylor reveal charity side

This demand for money issued by Sinclair Taylor & Martin against a Notting Hill bicycle repair man will make no sense if you haven't first read Brian Deer's Notting Hell from The Sunday Times Magazine of June 17 2001 and a letter concerning Roger Matland. A Westway Development Trust index of associated materials is also available. In July 2002, the North Kensington Amenity Trust, NKAT, renamed itself Westway Development Trust

SINCLAIR TAYLOR & MARTIN, SOLICITORS

Lyn Hardy-Smith
69 Golborne Road
London W10

PRIVATE & PERSONAL

4 June 1987

Dear Sir,

We act for Mr Roger Matland, the director of the North Kensington Amenity Trust [Now Westway Development Trust].

You have libelled our client in the most serious possible manner in a letter sent by you to my client's employer, the North Kensington Amenity Trust, purporting to be written by Mr Pat Smyth but in fact written by yourself. In that letter you alleged that our client had acted criminally in an effort to pervert the course of justice by exercising pressure on a third party to give perjured evidence.

You were well aware at the time of writing that letter that the allegations in it would have had the most serious consequences for our client's good name, employment and position within the community and the letter was calculated to defame.

Our client requires from you an apology in the form of the draft attached and compensation in the sum of £3,000 which he intends to donate to charities of his choice.

This is a very serious matter and we would urge you to obtain legal advice on it.

We look forward to receiving your reply within the next twenty-one days in default of which proceedings will be issued without further notice.

Yours faithfully,

Sinclair Taylor & Martin

DRAFT APOLOGY

I Lyn Hardy-Smith of 69 Golborne Road London W10 completely and absolutely retract my allegation that Roger Matland was involved in any way in attempting to secure false or perjured evidence or otherwise pervert the course of justice and I accept that any allegation that he did so were and are false, and I therefore apologise to him and to the Management Committee of the North Kensington Amenity Trust.
