One of
the central mysteries of the saga was how
Andrew Wakefield, an academic
researcher in the Royal Free's
medical school, came to influence the
hospital's department of paediatric
gastroenterology - which was meant to be
under the control of Professor John Walker-Smith. Holding a
non-clinical contract, Wakefield was not
authorised to admit or examine children.
Yet, as the rubber-stamped notes on this
page show, he was even credited with a
"clinic", from which he
launched his attack on MMR
